Five Blocks (and a Very Expensive Limp)

Sneakers & Stilettos™
I walked five blocks today.
Let me upgrade that statement for accuracy: I strategically negotiated five blocks on what is essentially a $300,000 custom-built, limited-edition, slightly rebellious ankle. At this price point, I really expected more features. Maybe Bluetooth. Mood lighting. At the very least, a setting labeled “effortless glide.”
Instead, I got… character building.
By block one, I was optimistic. Confident, even. Look at me, just a girl in a city, walking like a normal human being. By block two, the ankle started sending gentle reminders: “Hey… remember me? Let’s not get carried away.”
By block three?
Oh, we were in full negotiations.
My walk had officially transformed into something between runway model and injured pirate. Not quite a limp, not quite a strut — just enough attitude to confuse people and enough instability to keep things interesting.
And that’s when the thought hit me:
Is this what it feels like to walk in stilettos?
Because if it is… I’ve been severely underestimating an entire lifestyle.
Every single step became an event. A production. A carefully calculated risk assessment:
That uneven pavement? Suspicious.
That tiny rock? Absolutely not.
That slight downhill? Feels like a personal attack.
Meanwhile, everyone around me is just… living. Walking. Existing. Probably thinking about lunch. And I’m over here conducting a full internal TED Talk titled “Will This Step Be My Villain Origin Story?”
At one point, I actually slowed down near a crosswalk and thought, Do I really need to cross this street?
Like maybe my life is just… on this side now.
But here’s the part that makes me laugh.
At least with stilettos, there’s an endgame. There’s that iconic moment — you get home, kick them off, maybe dramatically throw them across the room like you just survived a red carpet and a bad decision.
Me?
No dramatic exit. No throwing anything.
This ankle is not going anywhere. It’s less “fashion choice” and more “lifetime subscription I didn’t sign up for.”
It’s like having the most high-maintenance, expensive travel companion who refuses to leave and constantly complains about the itinerary.
And yet… I kept going.
Step by step. Slightly dramatic. Slightly delusional. Fully committed.
Because here’s the truth — underneath all the sarcasm and the mental commentary — those five blocks weren’t small. They were effort. They were discipline. They were me choosing movement over comfort, again.
Not pretty. Not effortless. Definitely not pain-free.
But real.
So maybe this is my version of stilettos.
Not the glossy, perfectly balanced version — but the raw one. The one where you keep going even when it’s inconvenient, uncomfortable, and slightly ridiculous.
And honestly?
If walking five blocks in a $300,000 ankle with a sense of humor and a questionable limp isn’t a power move…
I don’t know what is.
